Why Alex Ferguson won’t talk to the BBC
The Editor — Fri, December 16th 2005
After walking out of a press conference after 74 seconds, Ferguson is in danger of burning his bridges with the national press.
His arrogant behaviour towards the press goes back a long way, especially in his refusal to talk to BBC Sports reporters after BBC 3 screened a documentary highlighting his son Jason’s dodgy deals in securing players for the club (BBC’s Fergie And Son press release).
I’m sure it is an attempt to generate some kind of ‘they all hate us’ siege mentality within the club, but the press’s knives will be sharpened ready for any future failures like the Champions League disaster.
I’ve never understood why the media has always treated him like some kind of football royalty, and in many interviews the reporter almost sounds scared. I’m sure Ferguson’s endangered this respect.
