I would like to comment on the award given to zidane….. how on earth can you award aperson like him in the first place you should first consider descipline wise & then an ward second ... please fifa don’t take things in your hands but consider other people’s lives to & put in shoes of that person…........... Ohhhhhh God have mercy on us.

It does seem crazy to give him the award. Apparently, the voting for the award took place at half time, before the head butting incident.

I am most certain Zidane deserves this award.  He has been a star player.  Lets not forget that though France worked together as a team but the star that led them till the finals was Zizou.  Ofcourse he derseves. I also feel that Materazzi should have been given the red card instead of Zizou for abusing such a legendary player and trying to instigate and provoke Zidane to take such a step. Why was he not given the red card instead of Zizou? Why are people talking about this one instance and are forgetting how wonderfully he has played all through out the game and got his team till the finals.  He is such a fine player.  Till now everyone was praising him and suddenly loyalties change.  Let me state that if you believe in someone then you should believe with your 100%.  The same people who are wagging their tongues about discipline would behave in a much worst manner if the same situation would come before them.  Lets not judge him for what he did, lets think why he did? Because Materrazi must have been abusive. Zizou - no matter what anybody says, you will always be the best for people who truly love you. I have watched you this world cup and regret not watching you in the previous years when you played.  I missed it, i must say.

I don’t think anyone is saying Zidane isn’t a fantastic player. His performance against Brazil was superb, and hopefully he’ll be remembered as the most skillful player of his generation, rather than for the sending off.

But, frankly, if Zidane had committed that head butt off the football pitch he would have spent the night in prison. Zidane is not a saint - this was his 14th red card of his career.

As James says above, a player’s discipline really should be taken into account, and I’m certain that if the voting for the Golden Ball had taken place after the game, Zidane would not have won.

Fine thats your opinion.  I also read on one of the sites that Materazzi said something serious about Zizou’s mom.  In that case, a son has full right to protect his mother’s dignity.  I am still in support of Zidane and if the award is for the best player then he was the best.  I agree with it- you may not or even if the world may not, doesnt make a difference to somebody who can understand why he did what he did.  I stand by him and I still reiterate that he deserves the award and you also agreed that he played brilliantly, well then he does deserve the award.

Armin: Zizou is one of the finest football geniuses of the last 50 years, of that there is no doubt. But he will also always been known for his flaws. As the editor points out he has had 14 red cards in his career ...and has had three expulsions for kicking and head-butting. This is a major character flaw. As to what words were exchanged between the two players we may never know…but we do know that what Zizou did was criminal. Plain and simple. Such a headbutt to the solar plex can stop the heart. He could have killed a man. Over what? Some words… No there is no excusing Zidane on this.
All the best… Ciao

PS in Spanish his site says: “ Italy wins over France in the final on Sunday. Grosso celebrated his wining goal in the penalty shootout. Zizou celebrated one goal prior to his expulsion. Zizou retired with sadness.“.  I think we all share in the sadness; of his retirement and for his tragic last act.

PPS on the fan link of his site you can leave your comments

Hi Vanni, as i said each one has their own way of thinking and you also have a right to think your way. According to me, getting red card does not always mean that you are at fault. during the match between England and Portugal, C Ronaldo instigated Rooney and when rooney reacted he got a red card. that was exactly what they wanted because they saw that Beckham has gone back injured now if this guy also goes things will be easy for them.  Thats not football thats dirty scheming plotting.  Last time when Zidane acted in a similar manner was when he was called a “filthy Muslim pig” by an opponent. do you think its the right behaviour?  The Italians are no saints.  Materazzi knew that Zidane is standing like a wall between them and the cup so he wanted to get him out and he abused him. Why was he not punished or penalised? Why Zizou?  Why do people who are jealous of him always pick on his roots? While saying we say all men are children of God and in practice we keep humiliating someone? When you are playing a game, lets just play fairly, why talk about mother, sister, wife, the roots and the personal details? why not concentrate on the game and play fairly? the Italians knew they wouldnt win if they play fairly so they did this mean thing to get Zizou out.  And by the way, when Materazzi was hit by Zizou (rightly so) he fell and acted as if he was so hurt (deserves an oscar for that one) but the moment the red card was shown, he suddenly became fine, all pain gone and played with the same strenth.  wow! how hurt was he! Lets also remember that no man is a saint, none of us, so why pick on one?  even Figo did the head butting but he was scott free.  and after what Materazzi said to Zizou (as in the paper reports) do you expect that he should say “my brother dont say this to me please, please can we play the game, i can give you all my family back ground after the game.”  According to me Materazzi should be punished for saying such horrible things to such a fine player.  About your comment on words let me tell you words should be spoken very carefully, words can cause war, words can make peace, words can hurt and words can heal. Materazzi just showed his character, the Italians rose above the French not on their own merit but by meanness.  They saw that in the second half France played with much vigour so they knew that if the game goes in penalty shoot outs they have a chance to lose so they used this dirty way to win.  I stand by Zizou.  If someone abuses my mother, my sister or my spouse in a dirty way I wont spare him either.  I hope Materazzi is punished in one way or the other if not by FIFA then by God who sees it all.
