World Cup to cost UK economy £4billion in lost hours

Wed, June 7th 2006

Staff watching the World Cup on the internet at work could cost the British economy almost £4bn, it is claimed.

Law firm Brabners Chaffe Street calculates that during the tournament, if just half of British workers surf the net for an hour a day, it will cost the UK nearly £4bn in lost time.

I’m sure I’ll be browsing more than an hour a day, but in the scheme of things I don’t think I’ll be contributing much to that £4billion…

No-one ever talks about how unfair it is that we still all work 8 hours days despite the fact that technology has advanced so much that we get more things done in less time.

Therefore, our employers and the “British economy” probably gain £400bn each year due to technological advance, yet they’re so greedy that they are unwilling to sacrifice a feable £4bn in comparison.

We work the same amount of hours a day, for the same pay, despite getting x amount more work done due to technology.

Furthermore, the amount of hours lost through football fans watching World Cup games in the office will still be less than the amount of time lost through the smokers we all have in the office who skive off five times a day, every day of the year.

Sorry, this is a football Web site, right? smile
